iPad review

I have had the iPad for over a month now and still think it’s an amazing device. I recently took it on a trip back home to Buffalo and I did not bring a laptop. It was a success for mostly using email and the web, there is no facebook app but it worked well in the browser. Watching movies and online video like hulu is nice. There was a slight issue with the wifi for it would not always stay connected after coming out of sleep mode, I would have to go into the wifi settings and rejoin the network. I do not have a stand for it so sometimes trying to type and hold it against my leg while sitting can be a pain if your typing a lot. Other wise, iBooks and the amazon kindle app worked well, especially while reading on the plane. There are also more and more magazine apps coming out, the wired magazine app is well worth it. Overall, if your thinking of getting one, get it. Preferably the wifi version, there’s wifi everywhere and free, in airports, hotels, starbucks and borders. So you don’t really need the 3G version and it’ll save you an extra $30 a month.

-Utilize Wifi instead of 3G/Edge; The Skype App comes in handy here.
-Turn Fetch new data Off; This will control data coming in, you’ll have to check email and sync contacts manually.
-Purchase a International data package; If your traveling a lot.

Facebook Privacy settings

There has been a lot of concern over the facebook privacy settings. Some people do not know how to set up their privacy settings, they just set up their account then start posting, not aware that everyone can see what their posting. You should never post pictures that you don’t want to come back and haunt you in the future, once their out there, there out there. But, other info like phone numbers, email address, IM screen names, and addresses you might want to hide from others.
To start, after you log into facebook, in the upper right corner click Account, then click Privacy settings, then on that page along the left side click custom, then next to that there will be a link for customize settings, Here is where you can choose what you want people to see.
More Facebook tips coming soon.

Ways to use Twitter

Twitter and Social Media/Networking in general have become hot lately. However, there are a lot of people that don’t really know how to use Twitter. They sign up for a twitter account because they see their favorite TV show, Celebrity, or Brand and want to follow them, but that’s all they see and then wonder what the big deal is and think, ‘this is stupid’. Well, that’s what I thought when I first signed up back in ’06, then slowly people started following me and a few months later I revisited it and started following back. It has since become a ‘river of news’ of sorts. You can go right to twitter.com and view your tweets, but the best way is to download a App. There are many apps for both your phone and your Desktop (PC & Mac). Tweetdeck has been a favorite of mine on both my iphone and desktop, but lately I’ve been playing with Hootsuite on the desktop. There’s also Web based apps like Brizzly.com, which you can have open in a tab in your browser, the difference between Brizzly and going right to twitter.com is with brizzly you can watch multiple twitter accounts that you may have, instead of logging out of twitter.com to switch back and forth, example your business twitter account and personal twitter account. Some people think you have to tweet about what your doing in the bathroom, that is not true, I for one really don’t want to hear that. It’s for to tweet where you are, ie. a good cafe, movie; or post links to your blog or a good article from someone’s blog that you want to share. Or pictures, even videos, ie. from youtube or somewhere. Or updates on what your kids are doing, (don’t give exact locations or full names of them for fear of some creep stalking them). People often think tweets are open and the world can see them, mostly it’s just people who follow you who can see your tweets, you can block people, however there is a public stream people can see (goes very fast) so if your concerned about privacy you can protect your tweets and lock it down so people have to ask you for permission to follow you, then you can approve or deny, you don’t get the full affect but that’s where multiple accounts can come in, you can have one for family, etc. and then one for everyone else. I have a few (which are all open) @scottpenton @yapstream @pentontech (my business one which I haven’t used to much yet) and then a special one @americanheroes which is for our fallen solders in the Iraq/Afgan. wars. So that’s how to use twitter in a round up. If I’m missing something feel free to add in the comments.

Favicons

I have recently changed the favicon on my site. The favicon is the little logo in the address bar to the left of the http part. If your using builder or any other wordpress theme you probably have a default logo, or if you have a regular website you may not have one at all. To create a favicon click here, this site will create the .ico file, all you have to do is upload a .jpg and it will give you the .ico and .gif files then you put those on your Web Server. Then for wordpress, there’s a very cool plug-in from this site, once you download the .zip file upload it to the plug-in section of your wordpress admin page, activate it then type the location, url, of where the .gif is located on your server. click apply and that’s it, your done. I love WordPress, and the fact that it’s open source with so many plug-in’s and themes. I hope this helps. Sharing is good.
